William L. Leahy

U.S. Veteran

Leahy, William L., 97 of Newport, Rhode Island entered eternal life on September 14, 2011. He was the husband of the late Florence (Galvin) Leahy. Born in Bristol, Rhode Island, the youngest son of the late John and Mary (Callen) Leahy, he was raised there acquiring the nickname “Horse” due to his football prowess and all around athletic ability. He attended Providence College.

Bill was a World War ll U.S. Army/Airforce veteran and served as a B-17 radio operator. He could fix any thing with a rubber band and a paperclip. He was a pari-mutuel clerk at Suffolk Downs Racing Association, Narragansett Park and Lincoln Downs, retiring at the age of 85. Bill nurtured three generations of young Newporters in pick-up basketball games and his backyard court became known as the Leahy Basketball Association /aka/ the LBA. Most of all he was devoted to his family. Bill’s family and friends will miss his love, wise advice, quick wit and sweet singing voice.

Bill is survived by his three children, Fern Crisp of Margate, Florida, William Jr. (Rusty) of Newport, RI and Lesly of Adamsville, RI and his three beloved grandchildren, Megan Crisp, Nick Crisp and Austin Jezak.

A Mass Of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Sept. 19, 2011 at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, at 10am. Burial will be held at St. Columba’s Cemetery in Middletown, RI.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011 from 3-6 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home 465 Spring St. Newport.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Village House Activity Fund, 70 Harrison Ave. Newport RI.
