Salvatrice L. Jenkins

Salvatrice “Sally” (Lozito) Jenkins , 90, of 206 South Rhode Island Avenue, Newport passed away peacefully Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Newport Hospital in the loving company of her husband of 66 years, David, and surrounded by many of her 8 children, 23 grand-children and 8 great-grandchildren. She was the eldest daughter of Concetto and Concetta Lozito. Despite being born on Federal Hill in Providence, she was a life long Newporter.

Sally was born on October 2, 1921. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1938 and attended Newport Secretarial School, a progressive career step for a woman of that era. She worked for the Farm Bureau, then at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island during World War 11. Her Sicilian and quite traditional parents were skeptical but she met and married an Irish Fifth Warder and settled into the busy life of raising 8 children. After 25 years of managing a large and active family, she began a very successful career in real estate with Lamond Associates and Prudential Prime Properties. Sally, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Island community and a historian’s awareness of homes and the families, who lived in them, was a legend among her associates. She was an active member of The Point Association, The Irish Heritage Association, and Hazard’s Beach Association.

After retiring, Sally and Dave continued to live in the sprawling house in Bushy Park, welcoming everyone to come sit and visit around the kitchen table. The house was never empty. Bed and Breakfast guests, wandering members of the extended family, friends, and old Newporters, all knew there was space at “206”.

Sally is survived by her sisters, Serafina DeAscentis, Mary Bellagamba, Anna Springett, and Rosemarie Nash, and pre-deceased by her brother, Carlo Lozito. She is also survived by her eight children and their families: Michael Jenkins of Newport, daughters Alexandra, Mary, and Margret Jenkins, Anna Burnley, great-grandchild, Dottie Burnley, Julia Hoffer along with Andrea Strauss and Candace Jenkins. Mary Hayes of Newport, her husband Michael, and their children Lily Maxwell of Kansas City, MO and Max Hayes. David Jenkins of Newport, his wife Karen, and their daughters Elizabeth Plowden, Myra Karahalis, Emily Loftus, and Anne Jenkins, and great-grand-children Madelyn, Charlotte, and David Plowden, Veronica Karahalis, and Leo Loftus. Sally Casey of Newport, her husband Steve, and children David Dahlin, Danny Dahlin, Erica Dahlin and Natalie Lyon of Jackson Hole, WY and great-grandchildren Mason Dahlin and Aza Chatterton-Richmond along with Jeff Dahlin. Anne Jenkins of Leadville, CO, her husband Chip, and daughters Hillary and Abigail Moatz. Tricia Dougherty of Newport, Dennis Dougherty, their children Maria, Joseph, David, and Patrick Dougherty. Dr Katha Jenkins, her husband Michael McDonald, of Silverthorne CO. Tommy Jenkins of Paia, Maui, his wife Amy, and their children David Kai and Luca.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday July 26, 2012 at 10am in St. Mary’s Church, Spring St. Newport. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday July 25, 2012 from 4-7pm in the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, Spring St. Newport.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Sally’s memory may be made to the Newport Rescue Wagon Fund, 21 West Marlborough Street, Newport, RI 02840.
