Mary E. Cooney 96, formerly of South Drive, Middletown, died Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Village House in Newport. She was married to the late William Vincent Cooney for 70 years.
Mary was born in Newport on September 2, 1915; the daughter of the late John J. and Albina (Maunsell) Boylan. She graduated from St. Mary’s Grammar School and Rogers High School, class of 1933. She continued her education at the Newport Secretarial School. After graduating, Mary worked at J.T. O’Connell’s on Long Wharf in Newport before working for the Department of the Navy at the Newport Naval Hospital during World War II. Mary was a homemaker for a number of years and was actively involved with the Hazard Memorial Grammar School and De La Salle Mothers’ Clubs. Mary returned to the workforce in 1960 at Raytheon in Portsmouth and retired after 20 years as an executive secretary.
Mary is survived by her five children, Mary E. Oliveira and her husband Charles of Middletown, Nancy E. Oliveira and her husband Antone of Newport, Rita Cooney-Brown and her husband Don Brown of Upton, MA, William V. Cooney, Jr. and his wife Margaret Palmer of Sewall’s Point, FL and Newport, and John B. Cooney and his wife Jennifer of Lake Worth, FL, 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Albina J. Murphy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2012 at 10am in St. Mary’s Church, Spring St. Newport. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown. At the request of the family visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
