Gertrude F. “Pat” Orth passed away with family members by her side on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at Forest Farm Nursing Center. She formerly lived at 12 Morton Avenue, Newport. She was the daughter of the late Paul P. and Mary L. (Sullivan) Orth and sister of the late Paula C. Donovan.

Pat was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1933 where she was a star athlete; she was the school tennis champion and member of the girl’s championship basketball team. As a member of the Girl Scouts, she attained the Golden Eaglet award –its highest distinction at the time. During World War II, she was very active in the USO and YMCA participating in activities which supported our Armed Forces. Pat worked in the office of Dr. Oliver Tisdall, DMD for 50 years as a dental and administrative assistant

She was a life long communicant of St. Augustin’s Church supporting the church’s many programs; she especially enjoyed the Christmas fair where Pat was a fixture with her sister, Paula, selling the raffle tickets. She also volunteered at Child and Family Services, the Newport Public Library and the Edward King House. Pat was a worldwide traveler seeing all of Europe, most of South America and taking ocean cruises with her traveling companions, Helen Galvin and Jean Conheeney.

Miss Orth is survived by her niece Paula C. Shea, Newport and Winter Haven, FL., nephews Leo P. Donovan, Jr., PhD. Stamford, CT., and Gerard E. Donovan and wife Nancy of Newport. She is also survived by seven grand nieces and nephews and nine great grand nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday, October 1, 2012 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street, Newport at 10am with burial following immediately in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown, R.I. At the request of the family, calling hours are omitted.
