Helen B. Coen

Helen B. Coen, 84, of Middletown, formally of Newport and Barrington, died Monday, October 15, 2012 at the Newport Hospital. She was the wife of Philip E. Coen.

Born in Newport on March 15, 1928. She was a daughter of the late Norman and Millie (Barker) Anderson.

In her younger years, Helen worked in Boston as a beautician. She was also a crossing guard in Barrington, a job she loved. A member of the Newport Athletic Club and member and devoted beachgoer of Second Beach. In the 1940’s Helen won the Miss Easton’s Beach title.

Helen was a longtime parishioner of St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown and was a member of the Church Choir.

Besides her husband Philip of 62years, she leaves her sons Tim Coen and Peter Coen, her daughter Susan Small and her husband Jonathan. Her grandchildren Liam Coen, Courtney Coen and Emily Small. She was the mother of the late Karen Coen and mother in law to the late Elizabeth (Bowley) Coen.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, October 19, 2012 at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown at 9am. Burial will be private. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport from 4-7pm.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Helen’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, R.I. Chapter, 245 Waterman St. Ste. 306, Providence, RI 02906-5215.
