Paul W. McCarthy, 72 of West Main Road, Portsmouth, R.I., died Thursday, March 7, 2013 in Portsmouth unexpectedly. He was the son of the late Rita (Speckman) McCarthy and William Daniel McCarthy.
Paul was a longtime restaurateur and Pub owner in Washington, D.C. and Newport. He was a Marine Corps veteran having served during the Cuban Missile crisis, and was based in Guantanamo, Cuba.
A native of Newport, Rhode Island. A favorite of young children and senior citizens. Generous to a fault and a heart of Gold. Kindness and good humor were his gifts to all.
Paul was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Newport.
Paul is survived by his brother, Lt. Col. Peter McCarthy, USMC Ret. of Washington, DC, and his nephews Will McCarthy of Boynton Beach, Florida and Brian Patrick McCarthy of New York City. He was the brother of the late William D. McCarthy Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at 9:30am in St. Joseph Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial at St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Visiting hours will be on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport from 4-7pm. A celebration of Paul’s life will be held in August.
