Nicholas James Grimes

56, of Seekonk, MA, died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the Boston Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Born in Newport on March 23, 1957, he was the son of the late M. Osmond Grimes, MD, and Elin (Nelson) Grimes.

Nick graduated in 1979 from Boston College where he earned a BS degree in Biology, cum laude. He earned an additional Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1981 from the University of Rhode Island.

Nick’s career started with the Computer Science Corporation in Newport, RI. He later moved with the company to Philadelphia, PA, and then to Research Triangle, NC. Nick then worked with the General Dynamics Corporation in Research Triangle. After 9/11 Nick worked for the Federal Aviation Agency in Ocean City, NJ. He was most recently employed by the Raytheon Corporation in Portsmouth, RI.

Nick leaves behind two children, Nelson Parke and Patrick Ordway Grimes and his former wife Carol Baldwin, all of Fayetteville, NC. He also leaves behind his dear friend and guardian angel Dawn Rogers of Seekonk, MA.

Nick was one of 16 children and is survived by his siblings: Peter and Sally Grimes of Middletown; Dr. Stephen and Jeanne Grimes, Michael and Beth Grimes, Dominic and Jennifer Grimes, all of Portsmouth; Dr. Andrew and Candace Grimes of Garden City, NY; Mark and Karen Grimes of Lake Mary, FL; Christopher and Billie Ann Grimes of West Warwick; Laura Grimes, Bartholomew and Maureen Grimes, Matthew Grimes and Kara Henry, Martin and Susan Grimes, all of Newport; Victoria and Brian Sullivan, Valerie and Patrick Kelley, and Veronica and Scott Walworth, all of Newport. He also leaves behind 29 nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Gregory Grimes, who is survived by his wife Mary Lou.

Nick was an avid sailor spending many enjoyable years at the Newport Yacht Club. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and storytelling. Most of all he adored his children.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 9:30 a.m. in Saint Joseph Church on Broadway, Newport, RI. Burial will be private.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the O’Neill Hayes Funeral Home on Spring Street in Newport.
