Cecelia M. “Skees” Sullivan, 92, of Atlantic Street Newport, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at the home of her sister, Theresa C. Sullivan on Dean Avenue.
Born on December 6, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Daniel J. and Mary (Curran) Sullivan. She was raised by her uncle and aunt, Jeremiah A. Sullivan and Molly Fogarty Sullivan.
Skees was a graduating member of the Rogers High School class of 1937. She attended the Rhode Island College of Education (RICE) where she received her degree in Education in 1941. In 1954, she received her Masters from RICE.
Skees taught Grade 2, Grades 7 and 9 English, Math and Science. She completed her tenure at Thompson Junior High School in the position of Guidance Counselor.
While teaching overseas with the American Dependents School; Skees travelled in 1955 to France; in 1959 to Germany and 1963 to Japan.
Skees was very involved as a youngster and as an adult with the Girl Scouts of America. She held the title of Water Safety Instructor throughout camps in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and California. Often she spent many summers with her friends at Camp Hoffman, for “Pond Day”.
She leaves her two sisters, Theodora S. Towle and Theresa C. Sullivan of Newport, both of whom she lived with. Her nieces; Maureen S. Wood and M. Eileen Sullivan, her nephews; Daniel J. Sullivan and Jeremiah D. Sullivan. Her Grand-nieces: Lisa Sullivan Taylor, Kelly Sullivan Emrick, Meghan Sullivan Liefeld, Erin Sullivan Helie and Casey Jayne Sullivan. Her Grand-nephews: Michael J. Wood, Ryan T. Wood and Patrick S. Wood. Great grand-nieces and nephews: Ally, Parker, Belle, Zack, Wes and Jacob.
She was the late sister of Mary Eileen Sullivan, Daniel Joseph Sullivan and Retired Newport Police Chief, Jeremiah D. Sullivan.
Skees traveled immensely throughout the world and often visited some countries 2, 3 and 4 times. After her trips she often hosted slide shows of her travels for her family and friends. Skees enjoyed much happiness from her daily caregivers Lisa Sullivan and Sue Cassese. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Visiting hours will begin prior to funeral Mass at 8:15 am, Tuesday October 15, 2013 at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring Street, Newport, RI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 am St. Augustin’s Church, Carroll Ave, Newport. Burial will take place at St. Columba’s Cemetery, Brown’s Lane, Middletown, RI.
